Understanding Dentures

A Closer Look at Crowns & Bridges

Dental crowns, made from porcelain, cap a tooth from top to bottom, enhancing its appearance and strength. Our Parkdale dentists use crowns to address various dental issues, including cracked or broken teeth, protection after root canal treatment, adding strength to decayed or heavily filled teeth, topping dental implants, and improving the appearance of misshapen or discolored teeth. Dental bridges, on the other hand, close gaps in your smile caused by missing teeth, creating a seamless, aesthetically pleasing look.

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. Crowns are typically recommended after root canal treatment, for teeth with very large fillings, cracked teeth, severely worn teeth, or to support a bridge or dental implant.
A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to the natural teeth (or implants) on either side of the gap. It’s a fixed restoration — you can’t remove it like a denture. Bridges restore the ability to chew, prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting, and improve appearance.
A single porcelain crown typically costs $1,800–$2,500, while a three-unit bridge generally ranges from $5,000–$7,500. Costs depend on materials (zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or full ceramic) and laboratory work involved. We provide written quotes after your consultation and discuss payment options.
Well-made and well-maintained crowns and bridges typically last 10–15 years, and often much longer. Longevity depends on oral hygiene, bite forces, grinding habits, and the health of the supporting teeth. Regular check-ups, daily flossing (including under bridges), and a nightguard for grinders all extend their lifespan.
Placement usually takes two visits. At the first visit, we numb the tooth, remove damaged tissue, shape the tooth, take a digital scan or impression, and fit a temporary crown. The lab creates your custom crown over 1–2 weeks, then we cement the final crown into place at the second visit.
The crown procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during treatment. Some patients experience mild sensitivity or tenderness for a few days after preparation, which usually settles quickly. If the tooth was previously infected or root-canal-treated, recovery is generally very straightforward.
A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth, mainly for cosmetic purposes. A crown covers the entire tooth and is used when significant structure has been lost or the tooth needs strengthening. Veneers preserve more natural tooth; crowns provide more strength and full coverage.
