Why do I need a custom mouthguard instead of a shop-bought one?
Custom mouthguards are fitted using a digital scan or impression of your teeth, so they’re tighter, more comfortable, and provide much better protection than boil-and-bite or stock mouthguards. They don’t fall out during play, allow you to speak and breathe more easily, and are far less likely to cause jaw discomfort.
What sports require a mouthguard?
We recommend a custom mouthguard for any sport with a risk of dental trauma — including AFL, rugby, soccer, hockey, basketball, netball, boxing, MMA, and skateboarding. Dental injuries during sport are common and can be expensive to treat. A well-fitted mouthguard significantly reduces the risk of tooth fractures, knockouts, and jaw injuries.
How much does a custom mouthguard cost in Parkdale?
Custom sports mouthguards at Synergy Dental Group typically range from $150–$350 depending on thickness, design, and whether you’d like custom colours. Night splints for grinding are usually priced separately, between $400 and $750. Most private health funds with extras cover provide a rebate — we’ll process the HICAPS claim on the day.
What's the difference between a sports mouthguard and a night splint?
A sports mouthguard is thicker and designed to absorb impact during contact sports. A night splint (or occlusal splint) is a thinner, more rigid appliance worn during sleep to protect teeth from grinding and ease jaw muscle tension. They’re made differently and are not interchangeable.
How do I know if I need a night splint?
Signs of teeth grinding (bruxism) include waking with jaw soreness, headaches or earaches, worn or flattened tooth surfaces, sensitive teeth, chipped teeth, or a partner reporting grinding sounds at night. We can spot signs of grinding at every check-up and recommend a custom splint when appropriate.
How long do custom mouthguards and splints last?
Sports mouthguards typically last 1–3 years, depending on use and how aggressively you grind in them. Night splints generally last 3–5 years or longer with proper care. Children and teenagers often need new sports mouthguards more frequently as their teeth and jaws are still developing.
How do I look after my custom mouthguard or splint?
Rinse it before and after each use, brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or non-abrasive toothpaste, and store it in its ventilated case in a cool, dry place. Avoid hot water (it can warp the material) and don’t leave it in direct sunlight or in the car.
