A Closer Look at Dental Emergencies

Understanding Dental Emergencies

If you’re experiencing dental pain without a history of physical trauma, our emergency dentist in Parkdale is ready to help. Urgent situations requiring immediate dental assistance include

Unexplained facial swelling indicating an underlying dental issue.

The presence of a dental abscess, a painful infection that demands prompt attention.

Accidents happen, and when a tooth is knocked out or dislodged, swift action is essential.

Sudden damage to a tooth causing significant pain and discomfort.

When a filling is lost, it exposes the tooth to potential complications, requiring urgent attention.

A loose crown or veneer needs immediate assessment to prevent further damage.

If there is profuse bleeding following an accident or suspicion of a broken jaw, it’s advisable to seek emergency dental care at your local hospital. At Synergy Dental Group, we prioritize your dental health, offering timely and compassionate care when you need it most.

Common dental emergencies include severe toothache, a knocked-out tooth, a broken or chipped tooth, a lost or broken filling or crown, dental trauma from sport or an accident, facial swelling, a dental abscess, or sudden bleeding. If you’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call us — we’ll advise you.
Yes. We prioritise dental emergencies and offer same-day or next-day appointments wherever scheduling allows. Call (03) 7036 6855 as early as possible — we’ll triage your situation over the phone and arrange the soonest available slot, often within hours for urgent cases.
Pick the tooth up by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it with milk or saline if dirty (don’t scrub), and try to reinsert it in the socket. If you can’t, place it in milk and contact us immediately. The faster a knocked-out tooth is replanted — ideally within 30 minutes — the better the chance of saving it.
An initial emergency assessment typically costs around $80–$150 and includes an examination, x-rays where needed, and pain relief options. The total cost depends on the treatment required, such as a temporary filling, antibiotics, root canal, or extraction. We’ll always provide a clear quote before starting treatment.
We operate during our standard practice hours, including extended weekday evenings to 7:00 pm on Mondays and Thursdays and Saturday mornings. For genuine after-hours emergencies, contact your nearest hospital emergency department or a 24-hour emergency dental service, and follow up with us as soon as we reopen.
Rinse with warm salt water, gently floss to remove any trapped food, and take over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen if you’re able. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, and don’t apply heat to the area.
Most private health funds with extras cover provide a rebate on emergency dental visits, examinations, and treatments. We process HICAPS claims on the day, so you only pay the gap. Specific cover varies between funds and policies — call your health fund or our team for an estimate before treatment.
