At what age should my child have their first dental visit?

We recommend a child’s first dental visit by around their first birthday, or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing. Early visits help your child get used to the dental environment, allow us to monitor development, and give parents practical advice on brushing, diet, and habits like dummy or thumb sucking.

Does Synergy Dental Group accept the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)?

Yes. We’re a registered CDBS provider. Eligible children aged 0–17 can access up to $1,052 of basic dental services over two calendar years, fully bulk-billed at our practice. Bring your child’s Medicare card to confirm eligibility — there’s no out-of-pocket cost for covered services under the CDBS.

What dental services do you offer for children?

We offer comprehensive paediatric dental care including check-ups, cleans, fluoride treatments, fissure sealants, fillings, mouthguards, and early orthodontic assessments. Our team takes a gentle, child-friendly approach to make visits positive and to help your child develop healthy habits that last a lifetime.

How can I help my child feel calm at the dentist?

Use positive language at home, avoid words like ‘pain’ or ‘needle’, and frame the visit as fun and routine. Bring a comfort item if helpful and let our team take the lead during the appointment. We use age-appropriate explanations, show-and-tell techniques, and praise to help your child feel relaxed and in control.

How often should children visit the dentist?

Most children should have a check-up every 6 months. Some children with higher decay risk, orthodontic needs, or developing bite issues may benefit from more frequent visits. Regular visits help us track development, catch problems early, and reinforce good habits like brushing twice daily and limiting sugary snacks.

Do you treat baby teeth even though they fall out?

Yes. Healthy baby teeth are important for chewing, speech development, and guiding adult teeth into position. Untreated decay in baby teeth can cause pain, infection, and impact permanent teeth. We treat baby teeth when needed and focus on prevention to minimise the need for fillings.

Are dental x-rays safe for children?

Yes. Modern digital dental x-rays use very low doses of radiation — far less than older film systems. We only take x-rays when clinically necessary, use protective lead aprons, and follow strict safety protocols. The diagnostic benefits, including detecting decay between teeth, far outweigh the minimal radiation involved.
