What is a TMJ disorder?
A TMJ disorder (temporomandibular joint disorder) affects the joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull. Symptoms include jaw pain, clicking or popping, headaches, ear pain, facial muscle soreness, and difficulty opening your mouth. Causes range from clenching and grinding to stress, bite issues, or arthritis.
What are the signs I might have a TMJ disorder?
Common signs include jaw pain or tenderness, clicking or popping when opening your mouth, frequent tension headaches or migraines, ear pain or ringing, neck and shoulder pain, worn teeth, locking of the jaw, and waking with a sore jaw. If you experience these regularly, book an assessment.
How is TMJ disorder treated at Synergy Dental Group?
Treatment depends on the cause and severity. Options include custom-fitted occlusal splints (nightguards), bite adjustments, physiotherapy referrals, stress and lifestyle advice, and managing clenching or grinding. In more complex cases, we may co-manage care with a physiotherapist, ENT, or specialist. Most patients see significant improvement with a tailored plan.
Can teeth grinding cause TMJ problems?
Yes. Teeth grinding (bruxism) puts significant strain on the jaw muscles and joints, often leading to TMJ symptoms, tooth wear, fractures, and headaches. A custom nightguard worn during sleep can reduce muscle activity, protect teeth, and ease TMJ pain. We’ll assess for signs of grinding at every check-up.
Do you treat sleep apnoea with oral appliances?
Yes. We offer Mandibular Advancement Splints (MAS) — custom-fitted oral appliances that gently move the lower jaw forward during sleep to keep the airway open. MAS therapy is suitable for many patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea or for those who can’t tolerate CPAP. We work with sleep physicians for diagnosis.
How long does TMJ treatment take to work?
Some patients feel relief within days of using a custom splint, while others take 4–8 weeks to notice significant improvement. Treatment is usually progressive, with adjustments at follow-up visits. Most patients are managed successfully over a few months, after which they continue with maintenance care and ongoing nightguard use.
Is a nightguard the same as a sports mouthguard?
No. A nightguard is a thin, custom-made splint worn during sleep to protect teeth from grinding and to relieve jaw muscle tension. A sports mouthguard is thicker and designed to absorb impact during contact sports. Both are custom-fitted at our practice for comfort and effectiveness.
